EDN®

EDN®

EDN® is an ozone-friendly alternative to methyl bromide. Its advantages are better penetration characteristics, higher efficacy and shorter application time. EDN® limits the risks of pests and disease spreading, within the agricultural and timber industry. It can be used to sterilize soil and control insects, diseases, nematodes, weeds and other parasites, before planting. It can also be used to fumigate harvested timber and logs. Its excellent penetration characteristics and high efficacy make EDN® a great solution for eliminating wood-boring insects in timber as well as pathogens and nematodes which present a direct biosecurity risk to many importing countries.

Applications

Soil Application

“As the world’s population grows, so too does the need to increase the quantity, quality and sustainability of the world’s food supplies. Experts predict that crop production will have to increase by between 70 and 100% by 2050 to meet growing demand for human food and animal feed. However, climate change and variability, water shortages and biosecurity risks mean this is becoming an increasingly daunting challenge. Already it is estimated that insects alone cause a loss of food sufficient to sustain about one billion people – roughly the number of people who are currently undernourished worldwide.

To secure and increase the world’s food supplies, the agricultural industry needs effective fumigants capable of protecting valuable crops against pests and diseases both before and after they have been harvested. More specifically, the market needs viable alternatives to conventional fumigation gases such as methyl bromide – which is being phased out globally as it is destroying the ozone layer. At Draslovka, we believe in innovative crop science technologies, equipment and services that balance the need for effective fumigation with environmental awareness. Underpinned by a strong sense of product stewardship, our pest control solutions present a more sustainable way to secure tomorrow’s food chains.

EDN® is a non-ozone-depleting answer to today’s fumigation challenges. Its active ingredient – ethanedinitrile – is an ozone-friendly substance. EDN® limits the impact of pests and disease in agriculture. It can be used to disinfect soil and control insects, diseases, nematodes, weeds and other parasites before planting fruit, vegetables and ornamental crops. The broad spectrum nature of EDN® makes it an ideal drop-in replacement for methyl bromide. With no known resistance, EDN® overcomes the problems associated with growing resistance among insects and pests to traditional chemicals and fumigants.”

Timber Application

“Timber – in its many forms from logs to finished articles – is constantly moving around the world. This timber is an essential building block in the homes, workplaces and furniture that surround us. As the world’s population grows, so too does the need to increase the quantity, quality and sustainability of lumber supplies. Global trade in wood products continues to expand in loc step with rising standards of living, accelerated in particular by the swelling middle classes in developing nations. Unfortunately, meeting this demand can come at a cost, with illegal forestry practices destroying natural habitats. At the same time, sustainable but untreated forest tracts can result in the proliferation of pests with the capacity to invade and destroy native forests. The emerald ash borer is one such example. Introduced to North America through timber movements, it now threatens to wipe out native Ash populations.

To secure and increase the world’s lumber supplies, the forestry industry needs effective fumigation solutions capable of protecting native forests against invasive pests and diseases both before and after the wood has been harvested.

Underpinned by a strong sense of product stewardship, our pest control solutions present a more sustainable way to secure tomorrow’s wood supplies.

EDN® is the next generation timber and log fumigant. As a replacement for the ozone depleting methyl bromide EDN® has been shown to have higher more effective toxicity on a large range of timber pests as well as having superior penetration qualities - even into moist logs. These excellent penetration qualities ensure that even wood borer insects are controlled. With no known insect resistance, EDN® overcomes the problems associated with growing resistance among insects and pests to traditional chemicals and fumigants. Draslovka is working with national and international biosecurity groups to establish global fumigation standards to support the lumber trade.
